Calgary, AB – We are thrilled to announce that Farah Ali, the Executive Director of the Somali Canadian Society of Calgary (SCSC), has been officially appointed as a council member to Alberta’s first-ever Black Advisory Council.

A Historic Step for Alberta

The Alberta Black Advisory Council was established to provide the Government of Alberta with vital perspectives on addressing anti-Black racism. The council serves as a formal bridge between the government and Black communities, focusing on:

  • Combatting Racism: Advising on strategies to dismantle systemic barriers and anti-Black racism.
  • Promoting Inclusion: Supporting initiatives for multiculturalism and cultural exchange.
  • Community Empowerment: Ensuring the diverse voices of Black Albertans are reflected in provincial policy.

Bringing the East African Voice to the Table

Farah Ali’s appointment is a significant milestone for our organization and the broader community. Known for his tireless advocacy and leadership at SCSC, Farah will bring a unique and essential perspective to the council—specifically representing the East African community.

His role will ensure that the specific challenges and successes of East African Albertans are heard at the highest levels of government. By sharing these lived experiences, Farah will help the council widen its impact and create more inclusive outcomes for all Black communities across the province.

A Message from SCSC

“This appointment is not just an honor for me, but a testament to the strength and resilience of our community,” says Farah Ali. “I look forward to working alongside my fellow council members to foster a province where every Black Albertan feels seen, heard, and supported.”

The Somali Canadian Society of Calgary remains committed to supporting Farah in this new role as she continues to advocate for equity, inclusion, and cultural pride.
